CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Alex, Jo, and Greg emerged from the trees not too far from the house. An ambulance sat in the drive with its lights on but not flashing. Men in black uniforms picked up filled body bags and laid them out in a row. Several dark SUVs with headlights on were parked in a row behind the ambulance. It looked like the SPD arrived rather quickly.
An armed guard stepped out in front of the little group, causing Jo and Greg to jump. Alex stopped and glared up at the man. He took a step backward.
âAre you going to let us pass, or do I have to go through you?â Alex asked. She was not in the mood to deal with some agent trying to act tough or tell her what to do. Sure, he was bigger than she was, but right now she had anger on her side.
The man hesitated and didnât answer.
âTheyâre with me,â Damianos said, interrupting his conversation with another agent nearby.
The man in front of Alex nodded and stepped to the side.
âThank you,â Alex said. She turned to Jo and Greg. âPlease go inside. Jo, thereâs a medical kit under the sink in the downstairs bath. Use it to clean and bandage any wounds the two of you have. Iâll be inside in a minute.â
âUm, Ms. Thorne, I killed a few of them in the vault,â Greg confessed a little sheepishly. He seemed embarrassed by the admission. âThey followed us down there, and I dealt with them while the others got away.â
Alexâs stomach dropped to her feet at the mention of men in the vault. She put her hands on the side of her thighs to keep her hands from shaking. She prayed to whatever god was listening that they didnât remove anything from the vault.
âThank you for telling me, Greg,â she said carefully. She heard her own voice threaten to crack. âItâs all right. Iâll deal with it. Go inside. Iâll be in soon.â
âCome on.â Greg took hold of Joâs arm and steered her toward the house before Jo could say something.
To Alex, the girl looked to be winding up to give them both an earful, and right now, Alex didnât want to deal with it. It had always been Joâs way of dealing with unpleasant things. Jo let Greg lead her away while Alex turned her attention to the line of body bags. Ten in all. It reminded her how dangerous a man Damianos was. Heâd killed many more than the three she and Munchkin had killed.
She walked over to the bags, squatted down, and unzipped the first one in the line. She searched the corpseâs pockets for any sign of identification or clues as to who he might have worked for. Movement in her peripheral vision caught her attention, and she turned to see Damianos standing next to her..
âTheyâve all been searched. Look at his left wrist,â Damianos suggested.
Alex did as he instructed. The tattoo wasnât hard to miss. âIs this what I think it is?â She looked up at Damianos, not really wanting to hear him confirm her suspicions.
